A grey 2023 Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet Suburban has long held a reputation for being able to tow almost as much as its Silverado counterpart, and the 2023 Suburban handily delivers on that reputation. Its towing capacity gives you the opportunity to tow the family and your recreational vehicles to your destination in comfort and style.

There’s a lot to like about what the 2023 Suburban has to offer beyond its towing ability, and at Vaden of Beaufort, we want to share what you can expect from the latest Chevrolet Suburban.

Towing Capacity Of The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban

The 2023 Suburban has a maximum towing capacity of 8,300 pounds. However, the actual towing capacity depends on whether it has two-wheel drive (2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) and is equipped with the optional Max Trailering Package. Here are the towing capacities for a Suburban outfitted with a 5.3L V-8 engine:

  • Suburban with 2WD: 7,800 pounds.
  • Suburban with 2WD and Max Trailering Package: 8,300 pounds.
  • Suburban with 4WD: 7,600 pounds.
  • Suburban with 4WD and Max Trailering Package: 8,000 pounds.

The Suburban’s maximum towing capacity also depends on the selected engine. For example, a Suburban with a 6.2L V-8 engine, 4WD, and no trailering package is capable of towing 7,400 pounds maximum.

The 2023 Drivetrain That Makes Towing With A Suburban Possible

The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban comes with the following three engine options:

  • 5.3L V-8 L84 naturally aspirated gasoline engine with 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm.
  • 6.2L V-8 L87 gasoline engine with 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm.
  • 3.0L I-6 turbodiesel with 277 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm.

The 2023 Suburban pairs all three engines with a 10-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive or 4WD. As previously mentioned, you can equip the Suburban with the Max Trailering Package with Regular Production Option coded NHT. This includes an enhanced cooling radiator and a two-speed transfer case for the LS, LT, and RST trim levels that come with 4WD. An enhanced auxiliary transmission oil cooler and external engine oil cooler come standard on all trim levels. A trailer brake comes built into the Suburban and features a seven-pin connector for powering the trailer.

The Suburban features a 28-gallon gas tank. The 5.3L gasoline engine with 4WD averages 15 mpg city/19 mpg highway for a combined fuel economy of 16 mpg. In comparison, the diesel engine with 2WD gets 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined fuel economy.

The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban Assistive Towing Technologies

Chevrolet loaded the 2023 Suburban with assistive towing technologies and the existing driver-assistance and safety technologies. It has up to 13 camera views that cover all angles and eliminate blind spots, making it easy to see where the Suburban and the trailer are at all times. The camera views include:

Hitch Views

The following three hitch views give you different options to see what’s going on with the trailer hitch, your Suburban’s position when backing up, and what’s on either side:

  • Hitch view.
  • Surround view.
  • Rear top-down view.

Driving Views

The driving views let you see what’s going on around the Suburban and the trailer while driving. They include:

  • Transparent trailer view.
  • Front camera view.
  • Pic-in-pic side view.
  • Rear camera mirror.
  • Inside trailer view.*

*The inside trailer view works with a compatible camera mounted in the trailer.

Parking Views

These four available parking views let you see everything behind the Suburban and the trailer as you back up to a spot:

  • Rear camera view.
  • Rear side view.
  • Front side view.
  • Front top-down view.

The rear views also come with guidance lines to show the best angle or direction to steer the Suburban when it’s in reverse.

The advantage of the tow package and available camera views comes in the form of not having to get a mechanic to prepare the SUV for towing. You’re ready to tow without installing additional equipment on the Suburban.

Safety Technologies That Help Keep You Safe When Towing

The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban features the latest safety technology and driver assist features that work when you’re towing and during normal driving. It comes with seven airbags as standard and the Chevy Safety Assist package that includes the following features:

  • Automatic emergency braking.
  • Forward collision alert.
  • Front pedestrian braking.
  • Following distance indicator.
  • Lane-keep assist with lane departure warning.
  • Intellibeam hi- and low-beam sensors.

Other safety and assist features include:

  • Lane change alert with side blind-zone alert.
  • OnStar and Chevrolet Connected services.
  • Rear cross-traffic alert.
  • Rear pedestrian alert.

All of these features come as standard on the Suburban, which means you’re ready to tow your trailer or boat safely from the moment you bring one home. You’ll feel secure and safe while you’re towing without worrying about not being able to see what’s going on around you.
