Underscored by the release of the Volt plug-in hybrid, Chevrolet has been keeping busy generating interest in EV technology. Their dialogue around the zero-emissions system has been running since the beginning of the year. It's been Volt wins this award. Volt breaks that record. That's all good and well. But, some enthusiasts are understandably starting to get tired of hearing the EV's name. Chevy gets it.

To liven the conversation a bit and spark greater interest in EV technology, Chevrolet is rendering a pure EV variant of the Spark mini car. Operative words: "pure EV". The Spark EV is fitted only with A123 Systems; li-ion battery, no gas required.

Similar to many EVs on the market and in development, the new Chevrolet Spark EV is expected to transform urban driving. Different than its competitors, it will do so with unparalleled proficiency and style. Via strategic development, the new Chevy Spark EV is synonymous with stealth cornering, nimble response, pent-up pep, and athletic good looks.

"The Chevy Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option," says Jim Federico, Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles, Chevy humbly. "It compliments Chevrolet's growing range of electric vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco with eAssist technology."¹

When will the Chevy Spark EV be available? In the not-to-distant future. According to Chevy, the pure-electric Spark will be available in select U.S. markets, in limited quantity, in 2013. Chevrolet knows how to celebrate. And, they should. They've had 100 years of practice, or very nearly 100 years. As such, while the American automaker doesn't officially turn 100 until November, festivities are already well under way. For example, earlier this year, you might have heard an announcement about a special-edition Corvette designed to honor Chevy's hundred-year milestone. The Chevrolet Malibu, named for one of California's most affluent beach-front properties, was launched in 1964. In 47 years of existence, the car has thrived. As you might imagine, we're already chomping at the bit to get our hands on it.

We're looking forward to the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu's larger 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. With a dual overhead cam setup and direct injection, matched to an new 6-speed automatic tranny, it's should deliver a fun-to-drive 190 horsepower (hp) and 180 lb.-ft. of torque.

In a perfect world, all midsize vehicles would be created with equal amounts of safety in mind. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. However, there is one that that stands above most all of its competitors. It's non other than the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
